“Words on Paintings” is the first of the National Art Gallery Committee’s 2008 exhibition series. The NAGC is pleased to partner once again with the Zemicon Gallery, host for this show.
“Words on Paintings” is an innovative concept for art exhibitions staged in Barbados. The NAGC has invited a number of Barbadian artists, collectors, curators and professional writers to select and respond to works in the National Collection as well as private collections Caribbean artists with the exhibition providing the forum for these written responses – poetry or fiction, critique or dialogue with no curatorial intervention in the selection-process.
The idea for “Words on Paintings” follows the highly successful NAGC November 2007 exhibition, Art for Export and public forum where the scarcity of documentation, critical writing, writers and venues for writing on Caribbean art in the Caribbean was regarded as the one overriding concern. “Words on Paintings” seeks to widen the spectrum of art-writers and commentators – not only, or even primarily, as an extended hand to posterity or future researchers and curators. Catalogues for these exhibitions are available for purchase.
