Wake me! Wake me! Don’t let me sleep too late I’ve got to get up in the morning to swing on the Golden Gate

We are coming all the way from African land, Coming to hear you pray. Coming all the way from African land, Coming to hear you pray.

To hell and back! I want a grog!

Ricardo Skeete was born and brought up in the city of Bridgetown so this project holds a special interest for him. He chose to respond to this part of Cheapside / Jubilee because of the agricultural history of the area. According to the artist, ““Passage” marks the arrival of the first people into the area passing from undeveloped swamp to modern metropolis. The different sounds help to tell the story of the passage of time. From waves on the shore and frogs calling, to leaves being trampled underfoot in a forest, the sound of hoof beats change to cartwheels and the hawkers to the mechanical sound of horns and automobiles.”

Ricardo Skeete holds a BA in Graphic Design (2006) from the Barbados Community College. When he participated in the whisperpost workshop, he was a student artist. He is now a practising graphic designer, photographer, and sign maker. He has a particular interest in African philosophy, horticulture, and architecture.
